At least 15 children die in Syria due to harsh living conditions

Freezing temperatures and harsh living conditions leave 8 children dead in the Rukban camp of Syria on the southwestern border of Jordan, with seven more children killed as they flee of battles in Hajin said UNICEF on Tuesday.

According to a statement by the United Nations Children's Aid Fund [UNICEF], 8 children lost their lives in Rukban camp on the southwest border of Jordan and Syria, while 7 others died of harsh living condition as their families flee of conflict zones.

Freezing temperatures and harsh living conditions at Rukban on the southwest border of Jordan and Syria are increasingly risking the lives of children, UNICEF's regional director Geert Cappelaere said.

"At least eight children - most of them under four months and the youngest only one hour old - have died," the statement read.

"Dangerous and difficult journey resulted in the death of seven children"

The statement reads that in Rukban, where 80 percent of the estimated 45,000 population are women and children, extreme cold and the lack of medical care for mothers before and during birth, and for new infants, have exacerbated already dire conditions for children and their families.

"Meanwhile, in eastern Syria, heavy violence in the Hajin area of Deir-Ez-Zor has displaced an estimated 10,000 people since December," Cappelaere said.

"Families seeking safety face difficulties leaving the conflict zone and wait in the cold for days without shelter or basic supplies. The dangerous and difficult journey has reportedly killed seven children – most of them under one-year-old," the statement read.

In the continuation of the statement, UNICEF called on all parties to end conflicts, facilitate a secure transition to families, and facilitate access to medical assistance for children in  Hajin and other parts of Syria.
