Calabash transforms into art in skilled hands

In Gaziantep, Imam Uzun, who makes small ornamental items and night lamps from calabashes for hobby purposes at the small age, is now exporting calabash to all over the world, which he started to process as a hobby before retirement.

Calabash which was used as a mixing tool in washing and also used for drinking water in the past is now being used as ornaments on the walls of workplaces and houses.

Imam Uzun, who retired after working in a bank for many years in Turkiye’s Gaziantep, is making a variety of ornamental items, especially night lamps from the calabash. Uzun who started to produce calabash in a small workshop is now exporting around the world.

Stating that his products were used as ornaments or night lamps in the houses he started to make 40 years ago, Uzun said that he has sent the calabash, which he started to work as a hobby before retirement, to all over the world and showed a great interest by tourists.

Uzun, who said that he draws ayah, hadith, beautiful words, names and kids of motifs, “I am delighted to offer the calabash I have cultivated nicely to the service of the citizen. I buy a calabash, I treat it like it is my child, and cultivate motifs carefully. I give shape. The calabash is so beautiful until it completes the process that it gives me pleasure, peace and all my tiredness goes all day long.”
