In Germany, voters went to the polls to determine new members of the Bundestag. According to unofficial election results, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) won 33 percent of the vote, the second worst result since 1949.

The coalition partner Social Democratic Party (SPD) received the worst result of party history with 20.8 percent. Right-populist alternative for Germany (AfD) been entered for the first time with 13.3 percent became the third largest force in the Bundestag. The Free Democratic Party (FDP) succeeded in re-entering the Bundestag with a 10.5 percent vote. 9.1 percent of the Green Party and the Left Party received 8.7 percent.

Angela Merkel, chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), said in her statement that her party had reached its strategic goals in the election, saying, “We are the biggest power, the task of forming the government is given to us and a counter-government cannot be established.”

Chairman of the Social Democratic Party suffered a heavy loss of votes in the elections and candidate for Prime Minister Martin Schulz has conceded defeat.

"It is a heavy and painful day for German social democracy in terms of history,” said Schulz, added that he will continue as chairman of the party in general, and did not want to be the President of the Parliamentary Group. Schulz, saying they will not continue the grand coalition, “the task given by the electorate is that we're clearly in opposition.”
