Operation against people in connection with Osman Kavala

At least 13 people were detained during the operations carried out against 20 people in connection with Osman Kavala who had been imprisoned for one year on the grounds that he had a great role in Gezi events.

The police took 13 people into custody, including academicians in an operation carried out against 20 people allegedly in a hierarchical order with Osman Kavala, who had been imprisoned for one year on the grounds that he had a great role in Gezi events.

According to information obtained from the coordination of the Istanbul Public Prosecutor's Office, as part of an investigation launched by the Directorate of Combating Organized Crime, it has been alleged that Mehmet Osman Kavala, board member of Open Society Foundation and the owner of the company named Anadolu Kultur A.Ş. was responsible for organizing and financing the Gezi Park events that started on May 27, 2013, by using Open Society Foundation and Anadolu Kultur A.Ş..

The statement read that the aim of Osman Kavala was to spread the protests throughout Turkiye and to cause chaos in the country.

In a hierarchical order with Kavala, the suspects accused of organizing meetings in a place called DEPO, which belong to Anadolu Kültür A.Ş, in order to deepen and popularize the Gezi Park events.

They brought in activism trainers, facilitators and professional activists (standing man, the man who plays the piano, the woman in red,) from abroad to ensure the continuity of Gezi Park events under the headings of civil disobedience and nonviolent action, said the security directorate.

The directorate said the suspects engaged in activities of creating new media with the aim of bringing the continuation of Gezi Park events and similar other incidents like Gezi that are likely to occur to the agenda via their own media outlets.

"It has also been detected that Osman Kavala met with several people and institutions based in Europe to stop and prohibit the sale of pepper gas, which became an issue during Gezi Park incidents, to Turkiye," the statement read.

As a result of the operation, the following names were taken into custody; The Chairman of the Management and Advisory Committee of the Open Society Foundation and Yale University and the Brookings Institute Senior Researcher Ali Hakan Altinay, Anadolu Kültür A.Ş. Warehouse Program Coordinator Asena Günal, Anadolu Kültür General Coordinator Meltem Aslan Çelikkan , İstanbul Bilgi University Academician Turgut Tarhanlı, Anadolu Kültür Board Vice Chairman Yiğit Ali Ekmekçi, Bora Sarı, Ayşegül Güzel, Çiğdem Mater Utku, Boğaziçi University Mathematics Teacher Betül Tanbay Tüten, Hande Özhabeş , Filiz Telek, and Yiğit Aksakoğlu and Yusuf Cıvır from Istanbul Bilgi University.
