Syrian Maryam's only wish is prosthetic legs

Maryam Hamdo, a 15-year-old Syrian girl who lost both legs while their house bombed during an airstrike carried out by the regime forces in Syria, said she dream the day she could walk again and that all she desires is a prosthetic leg.

The civil war in Syria left many dead, wounded and sad life stories behind. The life stories of Syrian are heartbreaking while many seriously injured or lost their limbs or traumatized by the fear they live as well as those lost their lives in the regime airstrikes or killed during the clashes.

Maryam Hamdo, 15, who is only one of those traumatized, was disabled by losing both legs in the air strike carried out by the regime forces while she was at home.

One of the bombs hit the Hamdo family's house in July when regime-owned planes carried out an air strike against Syria's Idlib. The bomb killed Maryam's older brother while Maryam lost her both legs. Other members of the family were also slightly injured by shrapnel fragments that hit various parts of their bodies.

Maryam was brought to Turkiye by her older sister for treatment. First, she was treated in Istanbul and then Turkiye's Kahramanmaraş province. At the end of treatments, doctors decided that Maryam can only walk by electronic prosthetics.

Maryam and her older sister Fatima Abdo, who have no place to live in Turkiye, are now staying in the "Charity House" of Human and Service Association in Gaziantep province, in Turkiye, waiting for charitable people to extend their helping hand, provide donation for electronic prosthetics, which her family cannot afford.

Suffering from lack of walking, Maryam lives bedridden due to the loss of her both legs. Expressing her desire, Maryam said she dreams to walk again.

Stating that her life was ruined by the war, Maryam expressed that she dreams to walk again, to possess prosthetic legs and returns to her family in Syria by walking. "I want to go back to school and play with my friends," she said.

Telling the moments of the bomb dropped on their house, Maryam said in tears that her brother has lost his life before her eyes, while she lost both of her legs.

"I started crying when I saw that I have no feet"

Saying that she remembers only the time one person carried her to a car, Maryam continued: "I sat at home while I heard an airplane sound, and then an explosion was. I then noticed my brother lies in blood. I couldn’t feel my legs. I then remember that I opened my eyes in the hospital. I started crying when I saw that I have no feet."

Noting that she came to Turkiye for treatment, Maryam expressed that the doctor said she could walk only with electronic prosthetics, which she dreams to have one and walks again.

"The most I want is to go back to Syria, to my family"

Speaking to ILKHA's correspondent, Maryam said she wants to go back to her family after the treatment. "My life now has been turned upside down. I lost my brother and legs. I wish God protect anyone from such suffering. We came to Turkiye because we knew the only place we could get help is here."

Maryam said her only demand is to possess an electronic prosthetics that will make her walk again. "I stay in a charity house in Gaziantep now. I also thanks to them for their help through the treatment process. I wish I will possess that electronic legs and at least get rid of being living bedridden. I can't wait to go to school again, meet with my friends. The most I want is to go back to Syria, to my family. I miss them so much, miss to meet my friends and walk together."

"She needs an electronic prosthesis for losing both legs"

Human and Service Association President Ali Kırmızı also said that Maryam Hamdo's treatment process is continuing and that since they do not have places to stay, they are trying to meet their needs in their charity house.

Saying Maryam needs electronic prosthetics just because she lost her both legs, Kırmızı noted that the price of these electronic prosthetics is very expensive. "We expect help from officials and philanthropists," he added.
