UN: 821 million people worldwide are under threat of starvation
821 million people across the world are battling hunger, the United Nations says in a new report. That number amounts to 11 percent of the world's population.
In 2018, more than 821 million people worldwide were victims of starvation, food insecurity, and unstable nutrition, according to a hunger report co-published by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Health Organization (WHO) and other U. N. organizations.
About 149 million children have experienced growth retardation due to hunger.
According to the report, the continent where malnutrition is most common; is Africa, where 20 percent of the region's population is affected; 12 percent of the Asian population is at risk of starvation.
In Latin America and the Caribbean, 7 percent of the population faces malnutrition.
Hunger is rising, especially in middle-income countries dependent on export products and where economic growth is declining.
The report indicates that women on every continent suffer more hunger than men.
