8 people killed in hospital fire in southeastern Turkey

8 coronavirus patients were killed when an oxygen ventilator explosion caused fire in a private hospital's COVID-19 intensive care unit in Turkey’s southeastern Gaziantep province on Saturday morning.

The fire broke out in the COVID-19 intensive care unit of the SANKO University Hospital after a high-flow oxygen therapy machine used in the treatment of COVID-19 patients had exploded.

According to the governor’s office, seven patients have lost their lives on the scene and one died on way to another hospital.

11 other coronavirus patients receiving treatment in the unit were transferred to nearby hospitals.

The victims aged between 65 and 85, a statement by the university said.

An investigation has been launched into the incident.
