Adhan echoes from loudspeakers at mosques in the Netherlands

Adhan, the Muslim call to Prayer, has echoed at mosques in the Netherlands, tugging at Muslims’ heartstrings in the heart of Europe.

The sound of the adhan rose from the minarets of the mosque the Hague in the Netherlands on Sunday.

A Turkish citizen who sent the video from the Hague to ILKHA News Agency said in tears that he heard adhan in the city for the first time in years.

“The adhan was only allowed in some mosques for Friday prayers. This time the adhan was recited at noon on Sunday. It was chanted from Al-Aqsa Mosque belonging to the Turkish-Muslim umbrella group DITIB. Even though the mosque is far from my house, I was able to hear the sound of adhan from this far. It was very touching. To hear adhan from the minaret after years was very reassuring. We were relieved to hear the call to prayer from the outside years later,” he said.

Nearly 100 mosques rang out with the sound of adhan in Germany and the Netherlands on Friday, as a gesture of support for Muslims amid the coronavirus pandemic.
