Armed police to be on planes in Turkey

The regulation on the possession of armed civilian police on flights was published in Turkish Official Gazette on Monday.

The regulation on the duties, powers, and responsibilities of specially trained armed security officers in civilian air vehicles was published in the Official Gazette.

Accordingly, the duties and powers of the air police in flights were determined as follows:

The air police shall be responsible for returning control of the aircraft to the authorized Captain Pilot in order to ensure flight safety, as well as taking proportionally appropriate protective security measures to ensure the safety of the cockpit, crew, passenger, and prevent illegal intervention in the event that one or more persons on board the aircraft obstruct, attempt to take control of the plane.

Air policemen, who will be deployed in civilian clothing, will guard the cockpit if there is reasonable doubt about the threats in question.

Police will not interfere with unregulated passengers and potentially dangerous passengers unless the conditions specified in the duty description emerge.

The air police will not be hierarchically attached to the captains, pilots, and crew of the flight as part of their mission on the flight they are assigned to.

The duty of air policemen, who will sit in seats like passengers, will be known to the crew on the plane but their identities will be kept secret from the passengers.

The duties, powers, and responsibilities of the air police will be carried out by the Department of Protection of the General Directorate of Security and the units to be established within the police departments of the provinces where the airports have international flights.

The air police officers who will be selected among police officers and higher-ranking security services class personnel must have worked in the department for 5 years.
