Armenian PM Pashinyan ready for early elections

Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has reiterated his readiness for an early election if opposition parties agree.

Thousands of Nikol Pashinyan's supporters filled Yerevan's central Republic Square on Monday.

Pashinyan told his supporters that he was ready for early elections to end a political crisis as long as opposition parties agree.

He emphasized that he would only leave if people voted for it during the election.

Armenian opposition parties have demanded Pashinyan’s resignation since November over his handling of the Nagorno-Karabakh war with Azerbaijan.

Last week, the chief of the General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces Onik Gasparyan and more than 40 other high-ranking military officers issued a statement calling for Pashinyan's resignation, which Pashinyan denounced as an attempted military coup.

Pashinyan dismissed the army's chief of staff and accused him of plotting a coup, but the Armenian President Armen Sarkissian blocked the dismissal.
