Azerbaijan conveys protest to Russia for “Nagorno Karabakh Republic”

Azerbaijan has sent a note of protest to Russia for using the term Nagorno-Karabakh Republic on the Russian government website, the country’s foreign ministry spokesperson Leyla Abdullayeva said on Saturday.

“Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs has immediately conveyed its protest to Russian side through diplomatic channels. It has been brought to the attention of the opposite side that such false information does not meet the spirit of friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries,” Abdullayeva said.

Russian officials explained it “as a technical mistake,” but it has not been removed so far, according to Azerbaijan’s media outlets.

Russian government’s single information platform in the defense ministry’s bid for buying maintenance services has used the term “Republic of Nagorno Karabakh”, something it has avoided doing in the past.

Karabagh is one of the most ancient historic areas of Azerbaijan. The name of Garabagh, an integral part of Azerbaijan, is derived from the words 'kara' and 'bagh' in the Azerbaijani language. The collocation of the words «kara» and «bagh» has a history as ancient as the history of the Azerbaijani people. It is an undeniable and indisputable truth that this collocation is universally recognized as pertinent to a specific area of Azerbaijan.

In late 1991, as the USSR collapsed, the former Soviet Union countries were facing a new geopolitical reality. Armenia practically waged an open and unjust war on Azerbaijan. Armenian troops breached Azerbaijan's state borders and entered Garabagh, and, having united with the Armenian separatists/terrorists of Nagorno Karabagh, started occupying Azerbaijani lands.
