California: Traffic halted in both directions on Interstate 5 as Route Fire grows to 392 acres

The Route Fire, which started around 3 p.m. on the east and west sides of Interstate 5 at Templin Highway in California, has grown to 392 acres, as of 7:30 p.m. Saturday, officials said.

“The thing that was really challenging was that the fire immediately spotted across the freeway. So, now we had a fire on both sides of I-5 and we had to ask CHP to shut the highway down in both directions, and basically, we’re fighting two fires,” said John Miller, a public information officer with the U.S. Forest Service.

He added that said the fire does not pose an immediate threat to any structures in the area.

“The fire has now grown to 392 acres and remains 0% contained. @CHP_Newhall has closed both the North and South bound lands of Interstate 5 at SR-138 and Templin Highway,” Angeles National Forest tweeted.

The agency said that the crews were making good progress on the fire due to an aggressive aerial and ground attack.

“Overnight, two helicopters from @LACoFDPIO and one from #AngelesNF will be making drops throughout the evening,” it added.
