Earthquake death toll increases to 39 in eastern Turkey

The number of people that lost their life in the 6.8- magnitude earthquake has risen to 39, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said in a statement on Monday.

39 people were killed and more than 1,600 people injured, 1,515 of them have been discharged from the hospital, in the earthquake hit eastern Turkey late Friday.

Until now, 46 people have been rescued from the rubble of collapsed houses and buildings.

Emergency crews are working at the scene of the collapsed buildings in order to rescue people remained trapped under the rubble.

The 6.8-magnitude earthquake, centered on Sivrice district in Elazığ, occurred at 20:55 local time on 24 January. The magnitude of the earthquake was determined to be 6.8. The earthquake was felt in neighboring provinces of Elazığ, Diyarbakır, Malatya, Adıyaman and Samsun. Kandilli Observatory revised the size of the earthquake to 6.5.
