Families start at a young age are breaking up by law

Rabia Yağmur Karamemiş, who stated that her husband had been arrested on the grounds that he married her at an early age, said that they had done nothing wrong but that they had just started a family.

Rabia Yağmur Karamemiş, who married to Enes Karamemiş in 2012, said her husband was taken from the home and put in prison after four and a half years of their marriage.

"Four and a half years after we got married, they [police] suddenly raided on our house in midnight and put my wife in prison for sexual abuse. They punished him with 9 years 11 months. My husband is not a rapist. We have just started a family," she said.

Non-marriage relations are free in Turkiye and all acts taken in this context are considered as part of freedom if the two sides consent, but people who marry under the age of 18 facing punishment.

Despite the consent of the two sides and the consent of the families, thousands of families who are married and have children have been tried on charges of "rape and sexual abuse" and sentenced to long-term imprisonment in Turkiye.

In this context, 8 thousand families are known to be victims of early age marriage when 16 thousand children of the same families grow like orphans while their fathers locked behind of bars.

"I am one of the victims of marriage at a young age," said Rabia Yağmur Karamemiş to ILKHA's correspondents.

Expressing that she met with her husband Enes Karamemiş in 2012, and decided to marry after a short time, Rabia Yağmur Karamemiş noted they married despite her family did not accept their marriage.

"My father complained that he did not consent to our marriage. My husband was arrested and sentenced to 9 months," she added.

Underlining that their marriage was in accordance with Turkish customs, Rabia Yağmur Karamemiş added that she gave birth to two daughters.

"We had a happy and peaceful life. My husband is a father who cares about his family, who values his family. 4,5 years later, one night, they suddenly took my husband to prison for sexual assault. The court sentenced him with 9 years 11 months. My husband is not a rapist. We have just started a family in accordance with our customs."

Rabia Yağmur Karamemiş continued that she now lives alone with her children while added that there is no income for the family after her husband was arrested. "Besides, our psychology is upside down now. A stain like this has hurt my husband and us very much."
