Hamas hails Abbas’ decree to establish election court

Hamas has released a statement regarding the decree issued by Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas to establish an election court.

“Issuing a presidential decree to form an election court is a positive step on the path of implementing the outcomes of the Cairo talks held in February,” Hamas Spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said.

“This move requires more practical measures on the ground to enforce the rest of these outcomes, especially those related to freedoms needed to create a state of societal trust and security for the Palestinian people that makes them effectively take part in the election process without fear or pressure that may negatively affect it,” he added.

On Monday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas issued a decree to establish a court to resolve potential issues concerning electoral cases.

The court will be formed under the chairmanship of Iman Naser Al-Deen, a senior judge at the High Judicial Council.
