“Media and ‘family protection law’ encourages divorce”

Political party representatives, lawyers, and citizens, who are evaluating the increasing divorce rates, said that fall to authorities against divorce, the Diyanet, scholars, and NGOs.

Political party representatives, lawyers, and citizens who evaluated increasing divorce in Gaziantep with each passing day linked the rates with immoral television series, programs and the virtual world on the society and the negative effects of financial difficulties.

According to figures released by the Turkish Statistical Institute [TURKSTAT], the divorce rate in the first 5 years of marriage in Gaziantep is above the average in Turkiye. While the divorce rate was 39.1 percent in Turkiye in the first 5 years, the divorce rate of couples across the figure was 46.4 percent in Gaziantep.

HUDA PAR Gaziantep Provincial Chairman Mehmet Nakşi Erat, Lawyer Hüseyin Kurşun and Gaziantep citizens stated that this figure is not normal for Turkiye's divorce figures above the average in Turkiye and described this as a disaster.

As the number of married couples in Turkiye decreases, divorce rates increase. HUDA PAR Gaziantep Provincial Chairman Mehmet Nakşi Erat evaluates the increasing moral corruption and divorces that are increasing day by day in the society. Erat stated that if the marriage base is firmly established in the view of Islamic perspective, these proportions will decrease and for this reason there is duty falls to the authorities, especially to the Diyanet and NGOs.

“Problems between spouses should be taken to family elders and opinion leaders”

“Because of the law instead of protecting, is more towards the destruction of the family. Problems between spouses should first be taken to family elders and opinion leaders. These laws need to be reviewed again,” said Erat by stating that Family and Social Policy Ministry's “Family Protection Law” increases the divorce rate.

Reminding the last data published by TURKSTAT, Erat continued as: “This has really worried us very deeply. Because it is a regrettable case. There are some reasons for this situation. It needs to stand on the reasons. One of them is demoralization. The other one is some trouble with the law. As you know about spirituality, now, especially in Turkiye, the visual media or print media, social media, they are not in accordance with the codes of our self and our religion and society. This is one of the biggest reasons.”

Lawyer Hüseyin Kurşun, who noted that marriage rates have been reduced in recent times as the divorce rates increase, said that this is a disease that modern life has brought about.

“Marriage is a sacred institution in terms of both religion and tradition and custom. Marriage is an institution where the emotional base is intense. Recently, the increase in divorce rates has led to a decrease in marriage rates, which it is a disease the modern life has brought us. When we travel for 5 hours under normal conditions, we have to get along well with our friends who we travel with. But when we are carrying out a long-lasting marriage, the spouses have to get by each other. Today, married couples, especially ladies, have a very high expectation of marriage. There are problems when these expectations are not met and a great part of these expectations are financial expectations. It falls into a void, which in a way affects the relationship between the spouses in the negative.”

Where the divorce rate is increasing every passing day, Fayat and Rukiye who are married for 45 years, recommended to the young couples to be patient in their marriage and said that the secret of their marriage is respecting and love each other.

Mehmet Şahin pointed out that the admiration of the West is trying to be established in the society and the degenerate of people comes with television channels and immoral programs have affected these divorces.
