Nearly 100 prisoners escape from Paraguayan prison near Brazil border

Nearly 100 prisoners, including members of Brazil's most powerful gang, have escaped from a Paraguayan prison through a tunnel.

Nearly 100 inmates, many of them members of the most dangerous gang of smugglers of weapons and drugs in Brazil, got away Sunday from a prison in Paraguay through a tunnel, apparently dug with the complicity of the guards.

The inmates, both Brazilians and Paraguayans, made their getaway through a tunnel they had built from the prison in the border city of Pedro Juan Caballero.

"Our best men have gone to the border to attempt to recapture the prisoners," police spokesperson Elena Andrada said.
