Only half of young people are happy in Turkey: Survey

The rate of youth in the 18-24 age group who declared themselves happy in 2018 was 55.4 percent in Turkey.

Turkish Statistical Institute [Turkstat] announced statistics on youth 2018, where information is shared about schooling, unemployment to employment, health problems and happiness sources of young population.

According to the results of Address Based Population Registration System (ABPRS), while the total population of Turkey was 82,300,882 by the end of 2018, the young population at the age group of 15-24 was 12,971,396.

Young population constituted 15.8% of the total population. While the male population constituted 51.2% of the young population, female population constituted 48.8% of it. According to population projections; it was foreseen that the young population will be 13.4% of the total population in 2040, 11.8% in 2060 and 11.1% in 2080.

According to the results of ABPRS, Hakkari, an eastern province of Turkey, had the highest proportion of the young population with 25.4% in 2018. This province was followed by Şırnak with 23.5% and Siirt with 22.7%.

The provinces with the lowest proportion of the young population were Muğla with 12.8%, Balıkesir with 13%, İzmir with 13.5% respectively.

While the net schooling ratio in higher education in the 2016/'17 educational year was 41.7% in Turkey, this ratio increased to 45.6% in the 2017/'18 educational year.

When net schooling ratio in higher education was analyzed by sex, while this ratio for males increased from 39.6% to 44%, for females it increased from 43.9% to 47.4%.

According to the results of the household labor force survey, while the unemployment rate was 20.8% for young people in 2017, it was realized as 20.3% in 2018. This rate was 17.6% for young males with 0,2 point decrease and 25.3% for young females with 0,8 point decrease with respect to the previous year. The proportion of young people who took part in neither education nor employment in 2018 was 24.5%. While this proportion was 15.6% for young males, it was 33.6% for young females.

According to the household labor force survey; when the employment rate of young people was analyzed with respect to the previous year, the young employment rate was 35% in 2018 with a 0.7 point increase.

When the employment rate was analyzed by sex, this rate for young males was 46.4% with 1 point increase and 23.4% for young females with a 0.4 point increase. While young employment was analyzed by sectors, it was seen that 16.6% of young people were employed in the agriculture sector, 30% in the industrial sector and 53.3% of them were employed in the service sector.

It was also seen that while 14.1% of young males took part in the agriculture sector, 36% in the industrial sector and 49.9% of them were employed in the service sector, 21.8% of females took part in the agriculture sector, 17.9% in the industrial sector and 60.4% of them were employed in the service sector.

According to the results of causes of death statistics, when the causes of death of the individuals aged 15 and over were analyzed; it was seen that the circulatory system diseases constituted 40.2% of deaths, while deaths due to external causes of injury and poisoning for young people was 48.8% in 2018.

The proportion of deaths due to external causes of injury and poisoning was 54.9% for young males and 32.9% for young females. While the proportion of deaths due to benign and malignant tumors in young people was 12.1%, this proportion was realized as 10.7% for young males and 15.7% for young females.

According to the results of the life satisfaction survey, the proportion of people who declared they were satisfied with their own health among the people aged 18 and over was 70.3% in 2018.

When satisfaction from health for young individuals was 85.5% this proportion was 86.9% for young males and 84% for young females.

According to the results of information and communication technology usage survey in households, the proportion of Internet usage among young people at the age group of 16-24 increased to 93% in 2018 while it was 90% in 2017.

While this proportion for young males was 96.9% in 2018 with an increase of 3.6 points, this proportion was 89% for young females with an increase of 2.3 points compared to the previous year.

According to the results of the life satisfaction survey, the proportion of young people in the age group of 18-24 who declared that they were happy was 55.4% in 2018. This proportion of young males was 53.5% while it was 57.2% for young females.

According to the results of the life satisfaction survey, health was the first value as a source of happiness for young people with 50.5% in 2018. This was followed by success with 20% and love with 18.9%. While the first value as a source of happiness for young males and females did not change, in the second order, it was a success for young males with 23.8% and love for young females with 23%.

Love took place in the third order as a source of happiness for young males with 14.9% while success took place in the third order as a source of happiness for young females with 16.1%.

According to the results of the life satisfaction survey, 76% of the young people were satisfied with their job, while 48.7% of them were satisfied with their income received from their job in 2018.

For young males, the proportion of satisfaction from a job was 77.2% and the satisfaction from the income received from their job was 48.3%, while for young females these proportions were 73.8% and 49.4%, respectively.

According to the results of the life satisfaction survey; 58.3% of the young people declared that they were satisfied with the education they received up to now in 2018.

57.7% of the young males were satisfied with the education they received while 59% of young females were satisfied with the education they received.
