People are cooling down in the caves

People in Gaziantep who effected from the scorching heat, shelter in the historic caves to get cool.

With the arrival of the summer season, in the city of Gaziantep, where the temperatures are 45 degrees Celsius, the citizens who are overwhelmed with temperature are trying to cool off in Kaleoğlu Cave which is one of the historical places of the city.

The cave is visited by approximately 500 people on a daily basis, which is preferred by the citizens in warm summer months due to the difference in temperatures reaching about 20 degrees inside and outside.

The historical Kaleoğlu Cave located in Gaziantep enjoys great interest due to its cool in summer and warm in winter. The historical Kaleoğlu Cave, which is one of the most visited places in the city, makes visitors amazed. Cool in summer, warm in winter, the cave, taking visitors in these hot days.

In the summer months, when the temperature is 40-45 degrees outside, the inside of the cave falls to 20 degrees, and in the winter months, the inside of the cave can stay as hot as 23 degrees.

Kaleoğlu Cave Operator Yakup Mermer stated that the cave falls to 13 degrees while the outside temperature is 40 degrees.

“While the outside is 40 degrees hot, the inside of the cave is 13 degrees”

“The cave was used as store for food and ammunition during the defense of Antep,” said Mermer and added that it is calling “natural air-conditioning” by public due its feature that hot in winter and cool in summer. “The outside is 40 degrees while the inside of the cave is 13 degrees. The characteristic of the cave is warm in winter, cool in summer. At the same time, this is a 500-year history cave. This used to be a stone quarry and was used as a refuge in Antep defense. Because the weather is extremely hot, citizens are coming to the cave to get cooler. There are about 500 thousand to 2 thousand visitors on average per day. On the weekends it is very intense.”
