Powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake strikes Japan, no tsunami warning issued

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit off Japan's northwestern coast on Wednesday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The earthquake, which occurred at around 5:37 p.m. local time (0837 GMT), struck at a depth of 368 kilometers (228 miles) in the Sea of Japan, known as the East Sea in Korea, according to the USGS.

No tsunami warning has so far been issued.
