Sarkozy in police custody

Former President Nicolas Sarkozy of France was taken into police custody.

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was taken into custody during an investigation into allegations of illicit financial support from Libya during the 2007 presidential elections.

Reuters reported that the Nanterre police were questioning the former president on irregularities in financing Sarkozy's 2007 election campaign. The Le Monde newspaper has announced that Sarkozy's custody may last up to 48 hours.

Sarkozy, who served as President of France between 2007 and 2012, was nominated for the 2017 presidential election but lost the preliminary election. Sarkozy lost 2012 presidential election against socialist rival François Hollande.
