A Nigerian court has ruled that Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaki and his wife be released and allowed to go to India for treatment, the Nigerian Islamic Movement announced on its Twitter account.

Sheikh Zakzaki and his wife were arrested and imprisoned following an attack by the Nigerian Army on a Husayniyah in the city of Zaria on 13 December 2015.

Hundreds of Muslims were killed by Nigerian military forces, along with three sons of Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaki.

Zakzaki had lost one of his eyes during his detention.

Zakzaki's incarceration had recently led to protests by his loved ones in several countries, mainly members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria.

Dozens have been killed in protests in the country as a result of attacks by the Nigerian military.
