Taliban attacks checkpoint, kill 15 police officers

The Taliban attacked a checkpoint in Afghanistan, killing at least 15 police officers, an Afghan official said Tuesday.

At least 15 police were killed when a dozen Taliban militants stormed a security checkpoint in Ali Abad district in Afghanistan's northern Kunduz province early on Tuesday morning.

The Afghan forces arrived at the fighting site and secured the area following the attack in the district, in the south of provincial capital Kunduz city, according to local sources.

The attack took place in Kunduz's Dashti Archi and Imam Sahib districts where Afghan troops have been battling the Taliban for the past few weeks.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the checkpoint attack.
