Europe floods: German death toll climbs to 156

The number of deaths from flooding has risen to 156 in Germany, officials said.

110 people died and more than 670 injured in Rhineland-Palatinate state alone, one of the worst-hit regions in western Germany.

The death toll from devastating floods has risen to 156 in Germany, police said, bringing the total to at least 184 fatalities from the disaster in western Europe.

“It is feared that other victims will be added,” police said in their statement.

Since 12 July 2021, several European countries have been affected by catastrophic floods, causing deaths and widespread damage.

The floods have affected several river basins, first in the United Kingdom and later across northern and central Europe including Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Italy. At least 184 people have died in the floods, including 156 in Germany, 27 in Belgium, and 1 in Italy.

The death toll is expected to increase further because hundreds of people are still missing after torrential rain caused severe floods in Germany and Belgium.

In addition to the confirmed fatalities, damage to infrastructure was especially severe in Germany.
