More than 12,000 children were killed or maimed: UN

While the number for other violations decreased or remained relatively steady, more than 12,000 children were killed or maimed, mostly by crossfire incidents, UN report revealed on Tuesday.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres presented on Tuesday the Annual Report on Children and Armed Conflicts, in which he revealed the highest figures of children killed or injured in armed conflicts since the entity began to monitor and report this serious violation.

According to Guterres' report, more than 24,000 children were killed, injured, maimed, forcibly recruited and kidnapped, or suffered sexual abuse and other human rights violations during the year 2018.

Among the data provided in the report, at least 12,000 infants died or suffered serious injuries in about twenty conflicts. He adds that an additional 7,000 were forcibly recruited.

Attacks by the Saudi regime in Yemen last year caused the death of injured of 729 children.

The number of Palestinian children killed or injured by the zionist terror gang also reached its highest level since 2014. Last year, 59 Palestinian children were killed and 2,756 children were injured.

Afghanistan was the country with most of the deaths and injuries of children. The number of children killed in Afghanistan last year has recorded as 3,062 while that number accounted for 28 percent of casualties and injuries worldwide.

More than 1,854 children were killed or wounded in Syria by airstrikes, barrel bombs, and cluster explosives.
