Turkey to reduce prison time

Those who commit crimes other than terrorism, organized crime, sexual offenses, and drug offenses will be released after serving half their sentences, according to the draft sentencing regulation.

Under the current system, convicts spend two-thirds of their sentences in prison, while those who commit crimes other than terrorism, organized crime, sexual offenses, and drug offenses will be released after serving half their sentences, according to the draft regulation in Turkey.

If the regulation is enacted in this way, thousands of people will be cleared for early release.

Under the current system, convicts can benefit probation for 2 years before their sentences expire.

According to the draft regulation, the convict will be able to spend one in 5 of his sentence spend outside of prison with the scope of probation.

Under the current system, women cannot be put in prison until 6 months after giving birth.

According to the draft regulation, the newly giving birth woman will not be jailed until a year after birth.

Those over the age of 70 will be able to serve 3 years in house arrest, while those under the age of 75 will be able to serve 5 years or less in their homes.

Women sentenced to under 2 years will be able to serve their sentences in their homes with electronic handcuffs.

In the current system, short prison sentences can be a condition of never entering prison. That would also be eliminated by the regulation in the draft.

Even if the person is sentenced to one month in prison, he/she will be in prison for a certain period of time if his/her sentence is not deferred.
