Lebanon extends medical state of emergency until March 31

Lebanese authorities have extended medical state of emergency until March 31 in an effort to contain the spread of coronavirus.

The state of emergency gives Lebanese government broad powers to implement preventative measures such as curfews and travel restrictions to combat the disease.

During the medical state of emergency, all social gatherings are banned until further notice in the country. Wearing a facemask in public is mandatory. Violations of the country's social distancing and safety guidelines are punishable by fines. Normal movement of personal and public vehicles on roadways is allowed.  Businesses such as restaurants, shops and gyms are permitted to reopen at 50 percent capacity and must close by 10 p.m. A nationwide curfew is in effect from 2300 to 0500.

Now, ten months since that first case, Lebanon has reported 132,817 coronavirus infections and 1,067 deaths.
