Price-rise in Tomato due to 'Russia'
Fruit and vegetable wholesalers and marketers in Turkiye have shown Russia for rising tomato prices.
After Russia's announcement that it will start importing tomatoes again from Turkiye since November 1 has also boosted tomato price in Turkiye. The tomato which was selling last week as 0.5 Turkish Liras per kilos in Mardin, has raised to 3 or 4 TL this week.
Citizens reacting to the hikes say they now only get one kilo with the amount when they could buy 5 kilos last week. The bazaars, on the other hand, argue that it is Russian effective that announced to buy tomatoes from Turkiye in November.
"The tomato we sold for 0.5 TL is now 3 TL"
"The price of tomatoes is so high that this means the marketers cannot buy tomatoes," said Ümran Turgay, a wholesaler, also expressed that they cannot sell tomatoes due to the rise.
Turgay said, "After the announcement that tomatoes will be exported to Russia, the price has risen so much that the wholesale price of the tomatoes was 0.5 TL, now it is 3 TL. Nobody buys it because it is expensive and we sell for 3 TL as wholesale which means marketers can sell as 3.5 or 4 TL.
"Nobody buys it because the price is high"
Suffering from being expensive Tomato prices marketer Selman Azboy also said: "Tomatoes are very expensive. We buy it 3 TL per kilos and we sell 10 kilos as 10 TL. It raised because of the tomato export. Kilos of the tomatoes before exports to Russia were selling 1 TL. The additional high price was 1.25 liras, now it is 3.5 TL."
