Turkey imposing curfew, lockdown as coronavirus cases hit record highs

Turkey is imposing a weekday curfew and a lockdown at weekends to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, which has claimed more than 14,000 lives in the country.

Turkish citizens have to stay at home between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. on weekdays or at all at weekends.

Some sectors, including supply chains and production, are exempt from the measures.

In Diyarbakır, the administrative capital of the Diyarbakır Province of south-eastern Turkey, citizens woke up to a quiet morning on Saturday.

The city's busiest streets and squares are empty and silent.

Police were patrolling the city, setting up checkpoints at several points while residents were staying at home.

Coronavirus outbreak, which was first identified in Wuhan, China and declared a pandemic by World Health Organization on March 11, has killed over 1,525,594 worldwide, with more than 66,288,887 infections, while recoveries have reached 45,865,873.
