Erdoğan speaks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel via video conference

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan spoke with German Chancellor Angela Merkel via video conference earlier today.

The two leaders discussed regional affairs, starting with the most recent developments in the Eastern Mediterranean.

During the video conference, Erdoğan reiterated his commitment to a fair allocation, whereby the rights of Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots in the Eastern Mediterranean would be protected, and which would serve the interests of all littoral states. He noted, however, that Greece, the Greek Cypriots and the states supporting them have been taking steps that escalated tensions.

Stressing that certain countries’ support for Greece’s selfish and unjust position was unacceptable, Erdoğan underlined that he would defend Turkey’s rights and interests against all attempts, which disregard international law, at all times and places.

Erdoğan also stated that he welcomed Chancellor Merkel’s efforts to contribute to the solution of the problem that has been caused by recent steps by Greece and its supporters, which undermined regional peace.

Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Minister of National Defense Hulusi Akar, National Intelligence Organization Chairman Hakan Fidan, Communications Director Fahrettin Altun and Presidential Spokesman İbrahim Kalın attended the meeting.
