Iran agrees to pay compensation for Ukraine plane it accidentally shot down

Iran has agreed to pay compensation for the foreign victims of a Ukrainian passenger plane that was shot down outside Tehran in January, Sweden's Foreign Minister Ann Linde said on Thursday.

We have signed an agreement of mutual understanding that we will now negotiate together with Iran about amends, compensation to the victims' next of kin. The agreement was reached following talks with ministers from the countries affected by the crash,” she said.

The Boeing 737 aircraft was struck by two missiles and crashed shortly after taking off from Tehran's airport on January 8, killing all 176 people on board.

Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 was a scheduled international passenger flight from Tehran to Kiev operated by Ukraine International Airlines (UIA). On 8 January 2020, the Boeing 737-800 operating the route was shot down shortly after takeoff from Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport.

All 176 passengers and crew were killed; it was the first fatal air accident involving Ukraine International Airlines.
