Lebanon names Mustapha Adib as new Prime Minister

President Aoun summoned Ambassador Mustafa Adib to assign him to form the new government, the General Directorate of the Lebanese Presidency announced in a statement on Monday.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun designated Mustapha Adib, the country’s ambassador to Germany, to form a new gov't after securing majority support from MPs.

“I thanked President Aoun and the MPs for their confidence, and we ask God for success in forming the government as soon as possible, and they prayed for us success,” Adib said after his meeting with the President Aoun and the Lebanese Speaker of the Parliament Nabih Berri at the Presidential Palace.

“There is no time for words and promises, but now is the time for action, and we will succeed to choose a homogeneous work team of specialists,” he added.

Mustapha Adib was backed by the Future Movement of Lebanon and a group of former Lebanese prime ministers to take up the post of PM.

He was nominated for the position while serving as the Lebanese ambassador to Germany in order to replace Hassan Diab who resigned on 10 August 2020 due to the outcry and uproar following the 2020 Beirut explosion which killed nearly 200 people.

Mustapha Adib was reported to have received support of major parties such as Free Patriotic Movement to form a new cabinet.
