Zarif slams US for imposing sanctions on top international criminal court officials

In a tweet on Wednesday night, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif slammed the United States for imposing sanctions on top international criminal court officials.

“US is imposing sanctions on ICC's chief prosecutor. Began w/ individuals, escalated to small, medium & major powers; and NOW int'l personalities. The only way to stop this unceasing insanity is to stop complacency. Submitting for fear of US wrath only INCREASES its appetite,” Javad Zarif said.

On Wednesday, the International Criminal Court's chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda was named as a “specially designated national” by the United States government, which forbids all U.S. persons and companies from doing business with her.

In November 2017, Bensouda advised the court to consider seeking charges for human rights abuses committed during the War in Afghanistan such as rapes and tortures by the United States Armed Forces and the Central Intelligence Agency, crime against humanity committed by the Taliban, and war crimes committed by the Afghan National Security Forces.

John Bolton, National Security Advisor of the United States, stated that ICC Court had no jurisdiction over the US, which did not ratify the Rome Statute.
